在中国传统文化中,虎被古人视为神圣的象征,是中华民族原始先民的图腾崇拜物。因此,历代各种虎形雕塑多有出现,古玉雕刻艺术当然也不例外。河南发现的商周时期玉虎,多为片状或圆雕,造型装饰简朴,富有生活气息,反映了其特有的形体结构和形象特征;春秋时期,采用玉片雕刻成对或多件虎形佩饰,图案均匀分布,形象生动准确;明代玉虎圆雕,刀法粗犷有力,求形而不求工,形态饱满,风格写实,具有一定时代特色。
