The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber (1936) is one of the best published Ernest Hemingway short stories, and her heroine Margaret has long been the subject of controversy in the critics. Many critics define her as the evil “murderer”, “real villain”, and “the most shameless woman in the novels of Hemingway”, based on the fact that she was bohemian and she shot her husband. . Thus Hemingway was also accused of having “misogyny.” This article tries to re-examine the heroine and analyze his specific behavior, revealing that Margaret is a woman with complicated personality and pointing out that Hemingway is actually a writer with strong female consciousness.
