许国璋先生是我国杰出的语言学家和外语教育家。本文认为,这两者是紧密结合的,相互促进的。早年在英国攻读文学的国璋先生上世纪50年代初回到新中国后,立即投入新中国的外语教育事业,为国家培养急需的外语人才。为了提高教学质量,国璋先生在50年代除编写英语教材外,在国内首先自学研究和介绍了索绪尔的语言学理论。改革开放后,为了解决外语语言文学专业语言方向的课程设置,特别是硕士生、博士生等高端人材的培养,国璋先生倡导对各种语言学理论的引进和学习,并告诫人们不要在语言学和唯理语言学之间划上等号,而是认识到语言学的多元化和实用性。在语言学归属文科还是理科的讨论上,明确指出语言学归属文科,提出新一代的高校学生应该文理并重的预见。从此以后,我国高校外语专业外语方向根据不同培养目标和需求为学生除开设听说读写、语音学、音系学、词汇学、句法学、语义学等课程外,还开设了普通语言学、社会语言学、功能语言学、心理语言学、计算语言学、认知语言学、文体学、语篇分析、比较语言学、翻译理论、外语测试等课程,从而保证和提高了我国外语教学质量和外语人才的培养。
