It was the first snow of winter—an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for recess (课间休息), but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher at Princess Elizabeth School near Hamilton, Ontario, had been through first snow days many times in her long career, but I think she may still remember this one.
I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots.” I didn’t realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.
I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.
I announced, “They’re on the wrong feet.” With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again. Then I said, “These aren’t my boots, you know.”
As she pulled the offending boots from my feet, she still managed to look both helpful and interested. Once they were off. I said, “They are my brother’s boots. My mother makes me wear them, and I hate them!” Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time, and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. With a great sigh of relief, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, “Now, where are your gloves?” I looked into her eyes and said, “I didn’t want to lose them, so I hid them in the toes of my boots.”
  1. According to the passage, the little girl got ____ from her brother.
  A. the wool snow pants and the jacket         B. the jacket and the boots
  C. the jacket and the hat                      D. the boots and the gloves
  2. Before the little girl finally went out to enjoy the first snow of winter, the teacher had to help
her put on her boots ____.
  A. once           B. twice                     C. three times        D. four times
  3. Which of the following sentences from the text BEST indicates that the teacher is very
   considerate?
  A. In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, ...” (Paragraph 2)
  B. With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to ... (Paragraph 4)
  C. ... she still managed to look both helpful and interested. (Paragraph 4)
  D. ..., she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying little girl. (Paragraph 4)
  4. What made it so hard for the teacher to help the little girl put her boots on?
  A. The gloves in the toes of the boots.         B. The slowness of the teacher.
  C. The wrong size of the boots.                 D. The unwillingness of the girl.
  B
It is common knowledge that in order to get a job in this day and age, you need post secondary education. With class size limits in force and prices of education on the rise the chances of you being able to attend a traditional institution are slim. Technology has helped to bridge the gap for those that are seeking a lower cost, online alternative to the programs they cover.
  1. Online Education
As the most flexible type of learning, you are able to study according to your own schedule. You have the freedom to study though working at the same time. You can do this by just having access to the Internet and the specific site that provides education online. Courses are categorized (歸类) depending on the needs of the student base. 2. Keeping Up With Technology
Jobs are becoming harder and harder to find. Technology and the improvement of industrialization have made many jobs outdated, yet at the same time opened up many new jobs for those ready for the challenge.
  3. Learn At Your Own Pace
You can chat with students from your own classroom as well as get help from real professors via email, voice chat or even a full video conference. Aside from learning, it will also be a way for you to have an access to well-known universities in the different parts of the world. The accessibility (易接近性) can’t be beat, if you have an active Internet connection you have the ability to study.
  4. Assignments
Assignments are a fairly safe region (in that they are hard to cheat on) as they involve actual work that must be completed and cannot usually be copied. Many institutions use websites like
http://www.Turnitin.com to test for replicated material. They automatically match any similarly structured sentences to databases of websites, other assignments and scholarly material and look for replication or plagiarism (剽竊).
  5. Why is it harder for students to enter a traditional institution?
  A. Because the number of students increases rapidly.
  B. Because prices of education rise and class size is limited.
  C. Because many universities are decreasing their class size.
  D. Because the expenses in college discourage many students.
  6. How are the online courses sorted?
  A. By the learners’ own schedules.                B. By the accessibility to the Internet.
  C. By the demands of the student base.        D. By the learners’ work conditions.
  7. If you want to find good jobs today you should ____.
  A. learn how to operate a computer       B. surf on the Internet everyday
  C. go abroad for a further study             D. keep pace with technology
  8. What might help you most in online study?
  A. Using websites like http: //www.Turnitin.com.
  B. Asking real professors for help by email or voice chat.
  C. Having a full video conference with bosses worldwide.
  D. Visiting well-known universities frequently.
  C
There was once a twelve-year-old girl named Pippi, who really liked amusement parks (游乐场) even though she had never been to one.  Her parents had never let her go because they said they were very dangerous, but they would make an exception on her birthday and take her to the biggest amusement park of them all. So on Pippi’s birthday, her parents bought her an all-day ticket for the park. Pippi was very happy about that, as you can imagine.
When she got there, Pippi’s jaw dropped in amazement at the amount of rides, and just how big the park actually was. Pippi and her sister ran to a new ride that had just been opened—the biggest rollercoaster (過山车) in the world.
Just as they were about to get on, Pippi felt afraid, which made her stop in her tracks ...
“Come on, Pippi! Get on, it’s about to go!” cried her sister.
“But ... I’m scared! This rollercoaster is so big and it’s sure to go very, very fast!” said Pippi in a trembling voice.
But then she remembered something her grandmother had said not so long ago:“Remember, Pippi, being afraid is the worst thing that can happen to you. Put it aside and bring out the courage you have inside you!”
Recalling these words, Pippi stepped forward and got on the rollercoaster. And that was how she learned that her grandmother was right and that you must overcome fear in order to move forwards.
  9. Why had Pippi never been to an amusement park before?
  A. Because she didn’t like it at all.
   B. Because her parents worried about her safety.
  C. Because persons under 12 were not allowed to go.
  D. Because her parents had never celebrated her birthday.
  10. When Pippi came into the biggest amusement park, she felt ____.
  A. sad              B. afraid                      C. amazed              D. disappointed
  11. ____ made Pippi stop as she was about to get on the rollercoaster.
  A. The cries from her sister                    B. The promise from her parents
  C. What her grandmother said                D. Being afraid of the big and fast rollercoaster
  12. What can we learn from the text?
  A. Failure is the mother of success.         B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
  C. Overcome fear to step forwards.              D. Hard working leads to success. D
Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. In daily life, people have come to expect endless situations about which they are required to make decisions one way or another. In the main, these are just irksome (令人煩恼的) moments at work which demand some extra energy or brainpower, or during lunch breaks like choosing which type of coffee to order or indeed which coffee shop to go to. But sometimes selecting one option as opposed to another can have serious or lifelong influences. More  complex  decision-making  is then either avoided, postponed, or put into the hands of the army of professionals, lifestyle coaches, lawyers, advisors, and so on, waiting to lighten the emotional burden for a fee.
The main impact of endless choice in people’s lives is anxiety. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of consumer goods induces a sense of powerlessness, even paralysis (麻痹), in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted in order to solve the problem and reduce the unease.
It is not just their availability that is the problem, but the speed with which new versions of products come on the market. Advances in design and production mean that new items are almost ready by the time that goods hit the shelves. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The classic example is computers which are almost waste once they are bought. At first, there were only one or two available from a limited number of manufacturers, but now there are many companies all with not only their own products but different versions of the same machine. This makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety.
  13. Sometimes people ask professionals to help them make decisions because ____.
  A. the decisions may have serious impact on their lives
  B. only professionals have the right to do that
  C. they have sufficient money to pay
   D. they have emotional problems
  14. When people cannot easily decide what to buy, which of the following is the least possible
   choice?
  A. Giving up.                               B. Walking away. C. Buying an unsuitable item.                   D. Seeking advice.
  15. Why do products have a short lifespan nowadays?
  A. They are of poor quality.                       B. They are quickly replaced with new ones.
  C. They have too many versions.                 D. They are not designed by computers.
  II. 根據短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(10分)

Bhutan is a country of about 750,000 people in the eastern Himalayas. Visitors may be surprising how much culture, tradition and nature are all flourishing in this very private country. The Bhutanese people believes that all forms of life, human and non-human, are precious and sacred. Because this attitude, they live in harmony with nature and their environment remains polluted, with an astonishing variety of animals, birds and plants. The people live in harmony with each other either, with no discrimination of some kind.
In order to safeguarding this rich natural environment and peaceful culture, Bhutan has adopted a cautious and controlled approach to tourism. In 2003, there were less than 6,000 tourists and this number is not expected to increase greatly. No independent travelers are permitted in Bhutan; all tourists must not go on a pre-planned, prepaid, guided, package tour. So, if you make the effort and manage to get a visa and arrange a trip, you will certainly have a life-changing experience in this magical kingdom.
