东风型内燃机车的400号轴,位于柴油机控制输出端与中变速箱之间。柴油机通过400号轴把扭矩传递到柴油机控制端后部的各辅助装置,保证机车、柴油机的正常运行。在1975~1977年期间,400号轴连续不断地发生断裂事故。据各机务段的不完全统计,断轴事故是很严重的。例如:麻尾机务段1673号机车连续发生了16次断轴事故,该段的1314、1313、1371号机车也发生过断轴事
