历来谈论杜甫诗风诗旨,最多的便是沉郁顿挫、忧国忧民,然而考察其早年诗作,并非向来如此。在杜甫一生的诗歌创作中,诗风是不断嬗变的,变是常态。杜诗之所以形成沉郁顿挫的主导风格,具有深刻复杂的多重原因,诗人的遭际、境遇和所处的时代等,都起到了重要而微妙的作用。譬如杜甫在长安的十年,特别是天宝六载(747)参加李林甫主导的制举的经历,既是他人生的一大转关,在诗人的创作历程中也显得十分紧要。以天宝六载为分界点,考察杜甫十年间的作品,可知其诗歌在情事、诗艺、风格等方面都呈现出不易察觉的微妙变化,而诸多变化对于诗人锻炼、塑造深沉婉折的诗风,干系重大。天宝六载,既是杜甫的人生转折,杜诗亦从这里转折。论文还对李林甫与杜甫的关系提出了新的观点。
