Electrochemical Corrosion Mechanism of Reinforcing Bars Moisture in concrete voids is usually in the form of saturated calcium hydroxide solution, which also contains some sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, with a pH of about 12.5. In the environment, a passive film layer is formed on the surface of the steel bar. It is a hydration oxide (Y-Fe 2 O 3 ·nH 2 O) with a thickness of 20 to 60 Å. It is this very thin oxide film that protects the steel bar. No corrosion, therefore, for those reinforced concrete structures with good construction quality and no cracks, even if placed
