Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a peptide hormone found in the digestive tract, central and peripheral nervous systems. It is synthesized in neurons and stored and released in synaptic vesicles. It may be a neurotransmitter or neurohormonal and plays an important role in neuromodulation. Experiments on immunocytochemistry in the pancreas of pigs, cats, and guinea pigs have shown that nerves that show an immune response to CCK-specific antisera appear at two different sites in the islets and ganglia. There are beads around the islets and ganglions that are not formed by the nerves. This shows that islets have CCK innervation. Chromatography and radioimmunoassay showed a variety of molecules
