Objective To understand the status quo and related influential factors of primary school students attempting to smoke in Nanjing and to provide a scientific basis for youth tobacco control. Methods A total of 3636 students from 31 primary schools in Nanjing were investigated by questionnaires using self-contained smoking questionnaires. Chi-square test was used to compare the smoking prevalence of different groups of pupils, multivariate Logistic regression analysis of various confounding factors were adjusted. Results The prevalence of attempted smoking among primary school students was 6.1%, that of male students (8.1%) was higher than that of female students (3.8%), the difference was statistically significant (χ2 = 28.207, P = 0.000). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that boys and their parents with the highest education level of junior high or below, both parents smoking, had not learned the knowledge of tobacco control in the classroom, and the students who were exposed to secondhand smoke within 30 days had a higher risk of smoking at school, with statistical differences Significance of learning. The total awareness of tobacco-related knowledge was 87.2%, male and female were 86.7% and 87.9%, respectively, with no significant difference (χ2 = 7.145, P = 0.067). The positive attitude towards tobacco was 95.4%, 94.3% for male and 94.7% for female, with a statistically significant difference (χ2 = 46.098, P = 0.000). Conclusion Pupils try to smoke more factors. Families and schools should jointly take steps to guide them to learn to refuse tobacco.
