August oil prices rose and then rose. The credit crisis caused worries about a slowdown in economic and demand growth in the markets, causing the global financial and energy markets to plummet. WTI and Brent crude fell to 69.26 U.S. dollars and 68.70 U.S. dollars on August 22 respectively, down nearly 9 U.S. dollars from their record high of 78.77 U.S. dollars set on August 1. Oil prices then climbed under the threat of a gasoline market and hurricanes. OPEC’s decision to increase the daily output of 500,000 barrels a day at its meeting on September 11 failed to ease the market’s concerns about the supply issue. Oil prices soared 80 U.S. dollars on September 12.
