Plague is a rare and potentially fatal bacterial infection. Plague is extremely rare in most parts of the world, including the United States, with 1000-2000 cases occurring each year worldwide. The three most common forms of plague are bubonic plague (lymph node infection), pneumonic plague and septic plague. Plague can spread to humans through flea bites, contact with infected animals or humans, or laboratory exposure. The plague and Yersinia pestis bacteria are thought to be a biological threat medium that could potentially be used as a bioterrorism medium. Recently, the FDA approved the Bayer HealthCare pharmaceutical moxifloxacin for plague, including the drug in the pneumonia-type plague (lung infection) and septic plague
