《红楼梦》第二十三回“西厢记妙词通戏语/牡丹亭艳曲警芳心”中有贾宝玉写的一年四季与姊妹丫鬟们生活情景的抒情诗,即《四时即事》(“春夜即事”等四首),其中有“霞绡云幄任铺陈/隔巷蟆更听未真”两句。大意是“锦被铺着,绣帐挂着,深夜中隔巷更鼓之声可闻,但自己并无睡意”(见《红楼梦诗词曲赋评注》1991第一版第157页)。但1994年国家外文出版社出版的英译本 A Dream of Red Mansions(byYang Xianyi and Gladys Yang)却把“蟆更”译为“thefrogs croaking”(“蛙声”/“青蛙呱呱叫”),完全曲解了该诗原文的词义。至今仍未见过出版社或译者公开更正。我选英译《红楼梦》的片段作为阅读材料的初衷是基于
In the 23rd issue of A Dream of Red Mansions, the lyric poem written by Jia Baoyu in the sentiment of The Romance of the West Chamber through the Xi Xi Di Ci Ci Ci / “Spring is the night thing” and other four), of which there is “Xia 绡 cloud 幄 Ren shop shop / every other to listen to unhealthy alley” two sentences.
