In 1997, the general trend of continued economic growth in West Asia and Africa remained unchanged. Compared with 1996, the growth rate of the gross domestic product of African countries rose from 3.9% to 4.2%. Botswana, Mauritius, respectively, maintained a high growth rate of 6.0% and 5.5%. Cte dIvoire grew by more than 6.5% for two consecutive years. The Middle East, North Africa region’s gross domestic product fell slightly, from 4.5% to 4%. This is mainly due to the drop in oil prices and the impact of droughts. However, the international oil price changes in 1997 were due to the political factors of 1996 instead of the normal decline after the normal rise. This does not mean the start of a new round of oil price declines. Therefore, the deceleration of economic growth in oil-exporting countries is also a normal fluctuation phenomenon. In general, the momentum of economic recovery and growth in the entire region has not diminished. The GDP has exceeded the population growth rate, achieving a positive growth in per capita GDP for the second consecutive year.
