Violence has always been an important topic of concern and expression in literary works. Zizek divides violence into subjective violence and objective violence, and puts forward that understanding objective violence is of great significance to the profound understanding of subjective violence. Subjective violence in Hardy’s works is manifested mainly in the acts of violence against others, on themselves and on other species, but the underlying reason is Zizek’s so-called objective violence, especially institutional violence. In addition, Hardy’s work reveals another objective The existence of violence, that is, natural violence. Natural violence is a symbol of natural existence independent of human society and an irreconcilable contradiction and conflict between the laws of nature and the laws of mankind and leads to the breeding of many subjective violence. Hardy’s profound understanding of natural violence reflects not only the discovery and breakthrough in science and philosophy in the Victorian era, but also Hardy’s concern and reflection on the relationship among people, man and other species, and between man and nature.
