Canadian company Mears completed a challenging horizontal directional drilling pipeline crossing project on the Labiche River in Yukon, northern Canada, with contracts from Duke Energy Gas Transmission (DEGT). The project is to build a new pipeline to replace the original 20-inch high-pressure acid gas pipeline on the river. The old pipe has been decades old, with the existing river channel offset by a considerable distance from the original river channel. It is imperative to build a new pipeline to replace the already exposed old pipeline. DEGT chose the horizontal directional drilling method across the river, this method can meet both engineering and environmental requirements. Through the length of 1275m, drilling diameter of 30in, so that 20in diameter pipe from the river through. The construction site for the river crossing project is located in the remote Yukon area in northern Canada. The nearest regular highway from the construction site is also 100km. Only during the winter construction period have the right to use the construction site of the land. From January to March, ice and ice bridges can be used to cross those difficult and environmentally vulnerable areas.
