Objective To investigate the protective effect of ligustrazine on axonal injury in rabbits with sustained high intraocular pressure. METHODS: Thirty-six New Zealand white rabbits were injected with alpha chymotrypsin into the anterior chamber of the eye to make a sustained high intraocular pressure model. The rabbits were randomly divided equally into a high intraocular pressure control group and a tetramethylpyrazine treatment group. The treatment group was intramuscularly injected at a high intraocular pressure for 7 days. Tetramethylpyrazine, observed at different times in two groups of animal bulbar conjunctiva microcirculation changes and optic axon light, electron microscope structure changes. Results Compared with the high intraocular pressure control group, the microcirculation impairment of the conjunctiva of the ligustrazine group was significantly reduced (P < 0.01), the number of axons in the optic nerve was large, the diameter was small, and the percentage of the optic nerve area was high (P <0 01). Swollen optic nerve axons are almost normal. Conclusion Tetramethylpyrazine can protect the optic nerve axons of rabbits with elevated intraocular pressure by improving microcirculation.
