In leprosy, the skin is one of the most accessible organs for bacteria. Bacteriology of leprosy is generally assessed using the Wade’s method of scraping the skin smear. Bacterial index (BI) is a semi-quantitative estimate of the total bacterial count. The morphometric index (MI) is the percentage of completely colored bacteria in the smear.
