WASHINGTON - Propagation tests planned for late 1981 or early 1982 will be the key to deciding whether or not to deploy a beam of weapons to a ship that will be deployed as a point defensive weapon against Soviet cruise missiles. Long-distance propagation trials of well-focused electron beams will determine their effectiveness against targets, and these tests will be conducted at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California. The Belt Beam Test is part of a U.S. exploration and development program that will test the 50 mega-electron accelerator with advanced technology developed by Livermore. The success of beam propagation trials is not only crucial to the Navy’s weapons program, but also to the nation’s targeted energy weapons program, which is what is under way within the Department of Defense (AW & ST Oct.2 , 1978, p. 14).
