In order to meet the growing human demand for food, scientists in many countries value studying how to introduce biotechnology into agricultural production. Japan is no exception. Among the universities and research institutes visited by the author, in addition to the research on improving the production environment such as fertilization, pesticides and soil improvement, most of them focus on the application of biotechnology in breeding research. Using DNA manipulation as the core, they develop in vitro test tubes to expand genetic variability and then select useful variations to maintain good genotypes and multiply them for high-yielding and high-quality varieties.
