The effect of red ginseng extract on ethanol metabolism was studied using male Fisher 344 rats that had been treated with ethanol. Rats were orally administered with water-soluble ginseng (200 mg/kg), and the control group was given the same dose of water, followed by oral administration (3.2 g/kg) or intraperitoneal injection (1.5 g/kg) with 50% ethanol. A certain amount of blood was drawn from the tail artery of rats before and at the time of administration at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours after administration, and certain values were measured and plotted as plasma concentration-time curves (0-5 hours). . It was found that the average area under the ethanol-concentration-time curve in oral ginseng group rats was 21.0% lower than that of the water control group in rats given oral ethanol, while the rats in the intraperitoneal injection of ethanol were found to have a lower average area. There was no significant difference in the area under the ethanol concentration-time curve with the water control group. This indicates that ethanol concentration in rat plasma will be lower when oral ethanol is used together with ginseng than oral alcohol alone. Oral ginseng was not affected by the concentration of ethanol in the plasma of rats injected intraperitoneally with ethanol.
