Objective To understand the status of depression in medical college students and explore the related factors of depression. Methods In this study, a descriptive study was conducted. In January 2011, all junior college students from the first and second year of three medical schools in Anhui Province were selected as the research objects, and the whole population was sampled. Depression assessment using self-rated depression scale, the possible correlation factors were measured with the Youth Life Scale, Simple Coping Style Questionnaire, Family Function Scale, Perceived Social Support Questionnaire. The influencing factors of depression were analyzed by multivariate Logistic regression, P <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The prevalence of depression in medical college students was 32.9%. Depression was more likely to occur in medical students who had negative life events than those in medical students who were negatively affected by life events. Depression was more likely to occur in medical students with family dysfunction and less social support (all P < 0.05). Conclusions Depression is common in medical college students, which may be the result of the interaction of many factors such as negative life events, social support and family functions.
