The tragic fate of black Americans being trafficked to the Americas, away from homeland and subjected to enslavement oppression, has led to the long incubation period for African-American theater. The outbreak of the Civil War promoted the awakening of black national consciousness and also gave birth to black drama literature. However, during the 60 years since the development of American black female literature, the development of American black female drama literature has been slow, far behind that of American drama studies. Almost all of the dramatic works on black life staged in the mainstream theaters of the early twentieth century were taken from the whites of white writers. The female drama works have been kept free from the groups of white theater writers and male black theater writers.
