Footbinding is a bad habit in ancient China. After the founding of New China in 1949, the deformity of the old custom was abolished. On the history of the problem of footbinding, many scholars have made a research, there are five general terms, of which the most originated in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Footbinding caused great harm to the body and mind of women. In modern China, several large-scale anti-foot-binding exercises were launched. Some scholars think anti-foot-binding movement is a sign of the real liberation of women, but this view seems a bit simple. In fact, all kinds of anti-foot-wrapping movements in modern history were initiated by men. Women’s “female consciousness” and women’s right to choose were not substantially improved.
