South Reviews
Issue No. 22, 2018
On September 7, 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech during his visit to Kazakhstan, saying that with the rapid development of China’s relations with Eurasian countries over the past 20 years, the ancient Silk Road was gaining new vitality. “To deepen economic ties with Eurasian countries, I propose that we work together to build a Silk Road Economic Belt.”
About one month later, Xi addressed the Indonesian Parliament. In the speech, he said Southeast Asia has been an important hub along the Maritime Silk Road since ancient times. “China is ready to work with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to promote maritime cooperation and build a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road,” he said.
They were then developed into the Belt and Road Initiative. Despite being proposed by China, it is never a platform for China’s “one-man show,”but an open and inclusive mechanism. China’s reform and opening-up started from international cooperation. As an upgraded version of it, noted Le Yucheng, the vice minister of foreign affairs, the Belt and Road Initiative is launched for upgraded international cooperation.
From China’s perspective, this upgraded version is also the extension of the going global strategy for Chinese enterprises. For the international community, it is about economic development. In both cases, the initiative focuses on economic development and cooperation. The key to its sustainable and sound development lies in whether economic principles and laws are well observed.
Private Enterprises Key to National Economy
Caijing Magazine
Issue No. 24, 2018
In the past 40 years since its reform and opening-up, China has undergone unprecedented changes. Facts have shown that the private economy has been invigorated, and contributed hugely to the prosperity of China.
For some time, there have been a lot of controversies about private enterprises, and there have also been many calls for treating them well. This reflects two problems. One is that private enterprises have encountered difficulties in their development; the other is that private entrepreneurs are somewhat bewildered in the quest for business expansion.
Caijing Magazine, in this issue, speaks with people who have participated in the development of the private economy in the past decades, and talks about the past, present and future of China’s private economy. Huang Mengfu, former president of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, pointed out that private economy stabilizes China’s economic development against the background of a complicated and changing international situation. Duan Yongji, an entrepreneur, said that China is in a phase of transformation. Private enterprises should, on the one hand, make their own contributions to the reform, and on the other, attach great importance to the innovation of core technologies. He called for practical actions to refute various fallacies and push forward reform.

People’s Weekly
Issue No. 18, 2018
The year of 2017 witnessed tangible benefits brought to Chinese people thanks to the medical care reform. The National Health Commission made comprehensive reforms in public hospitals, including requiring hospitals to phase out surcharges on drugs.
Great headways have been made in building a hierarchical medical treatment system to direct medical resources to primary levels. Improved medical services are made available to more people with the integrated medical resources and the introduction of family doctors and telemedicine services. Over 13,000 medical institutions across the country have launched telemedicine services, covering all national-level poor counties.
In the area of the comprehensive reform of public hospitals, a scientific management model is the aim. The practice of centralized purchasing of pharmaceutics has been introduced in an attempt to address drug shortages and lower inflated prices.
Besides, reform on the income distribution mechanism is also underway to build a salary system in line with the characteristics of the medical services sector.
The ultimate goal of the medical reform is to ensure citizens’equal access to basic medical and health services, which is an integral part of a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
Which Is the Most Modern City in China?
New Weekly
Issue No. 21, 2018
There are two kinds of cities in China: hard cities and soft ones. The former ones have high GDP, high-rises, and heavy traffic jams, while the latter ones offer residents a leisurely, pleasant and fashionable lifestyle, which is the future trend.
New Weekly released a report recently on the “fashion index” of Chinese cities. It rated four cities as fashion capitals of China based on the index, which examine a city’s strength in offering people a better life. The cream of the crop are Shanghai, Chengdu, Beijing, and Hangzhou. Shanghai ties with Chengdu as the most fashionable city.
Shanghai has long been famous for being fashionable, but why does Chengdu top the ranking? The reason is that it is rich, innovative, stylish, and leisurely, making the city an ideal place for both job seekers and those who plan to settle down. As a world-famous cultural city, Chengdu is a city full of all possibilities and wild ideas that might turn into reality.
It is also the creative, culinary, and music capital of China. Chengdu Taikoo Li shopping center and the Chengdu International Finance Square, which features a statue of a giant panda, are both elegant and modern. People across the world are crazy about the sizzling spicy Sichuan dishes.
