该书由我校潘炯华教授和郑文彪讲师合作编著,获1988年中南五省(区)第二届优秀科技图书奖.全书共分五章,即胡子鲶的生物学特性,人工繁殖,鱼苗、鱼种培养,成鱼养殖,鱼病防治.另有附录四个,即鱼苗活饲料的培育,鲤鱼脑下垂体的摘取和保存,鱼种浸洗消毒常用药物用量参考,本国胡子鲶与泰国胡子鲶的氨基酸含量测定.潘教授早在60年代初期就进行胡子鲶(塘虱鱼)的驯化利用研究工作,在养殖胡子鲶方面积累了丰富的经验,该书把作者多年来对胡子鲶的研究成果与养殖的实践经验结合起来,理论与实践结合紧密,深入浅出,易懂易学,出版后深受各界人士的欢迎,引起有关专家、水产养殖工作者和养殖个体户的重视.1985年10月作者在亚洲淡水养鱼学术讨论会上报告“中国胡子鲶的养殖”论文后,有几个东南亚国家的水产养殖专家马上向作者索取该书;不少读者和养殖专业户读了该书后给作者来信,叙述该书使他们的胡子鲶养殖工作,包括种苗
