Majesty and Splendor in Just Ways
The 4th Hangzhou Biennale of Traditional Chinese Painting was held around Spring Festival in 2017 in Hangzhou. It was jointly sponsored by China Artists Association, Zhejiang Federation of Literary and Artistic Circles, Zhejiang Administration of Culture and China Academy of Art.
The biennale featured “Majesty and Splendor in Just Ways” as its theme. The 256 exhibits at the event were all large-size paintings in the central scroll format, a format for halls in traditional residences. Three themes were highlighted:
Airs: Nostalgia, Hymns: Grace and Rhythms, Eulogies: Odes to Majesty and Splendor. The sectional names were directly copied from China’s most ancient collection poetry titled “The Book of Songs”.
Praiseworthy were the diversity and distinct theme of the biennale, which featured the charms and essences of traditional Chinese art and culture.
