“Brown Girl, Brown Brick Room” is the first semi-autobiographical novel by African American writer Bob Marshall. In the context of the conflict between black and white cultures and values, it describes the confusion, pain and helplessness of a Barbados black girl, Serena Boyce, who grew up in a heterogeneous American culture, as well as her striving to change her own destiny Efforts and expectations of future life. In the face of adversity, the heroine tries her best to seek self identity and position by continuously fighting against the outside world and deeply introspecting her, constructing a new type of black female image that meets individual freedom and races and genders.
