中国传统山水画中的金碧山水与藏传佛教的唐卡都以用金而著称,但两者在对金色的使用态度与最后的呈现效果却截然不同。传统金碧山水中的金色多用在宫室楼阁的装饰以及山石、祥云、水波等的轮廓线内,又或者在山脚处稍敷金色,其作用是加强画面的装饰性,线性的勾勒呈现出较为随意的样态。而唐卡则不然,绘制者完全是一种虔诚、谨慎、细腻的朝圣态度。除了佛像的金身完全是以金色涂满外,佛像身上袈裟的花纹,莲座的装饰纹样,背景的山石、花卉等都无一不被精心细致地敷彩勾金。
