In the 1990s, due to the changes in the world economy and the structure of foreign trade products, foreign trade goods using container transportation have been increasing. In 1990, the world’s container shipping volume was 27.6 million TEU and the volume of container cargo trade was 1.189 trillion U.S. dollars, accounting for 36% of the total world trade. The shipping authority estimates that the world’s container shipping volume will reach 3880-43.7 million TEU by the year 2000, and that the volume of container freight trade will reach 16.5-185 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 34-38% of the world’s total trade volume. Visible international container shipping is developing at an alarming rate, and its position in international trade will become increasingly prominent.
