刘继卣(1918-1983年),天津市人,自幼从父刘奎龄学工笔人物、动物画。1936年,人天津市立美术馆从刘啸若学素描和水彩,从刘子久学山水画。1938年毕业后,一直从事国画创作,历任人民美术出版社创作室创作员、文化部国画创作组组员、中国美术家协会理事。刘继卣的很多动物画,在强调传统用线的基础上,吸取西画的体块意识和明暗关系的表现,使之更加富于体积感。《雄狮》这幅作品,是画家学贯中西的代表作品之一。画中用笔
