在水稻杂交育种中常用高抗、优质的亲本,但其多数存在着诸如株形较高、生育期偏长等弊端,这些不良性状的连锁给杂交育种工作带来极大的麻烦,后代分裂严重,往往连续数代尚难稳定,也不易找出理想的株型来,为此在杂交育种的同时,进行亲本性状的改良是很有必要的。核辐射诱变的优点,能使具有某些缺点的品种得到改良,无需对整个基因型重组即可除去或大大减轻其不良特性。综合各地和我室的试验表明,利用r射线诱发早熟、矮杆突变有较明显的效果,通过辐射诱变有可能筛选出既保持抗病、优质基因,又早熟、矮杆的水稻亲本。
