大师之称,通常由艺术历史所赋予,盖棺而后论定(当然,由于政治原因,有时盖棺也论个定的)。当代人奉承当代某艺术家为“大师”,乃是一种褒扬词,无实际的学术定位价值,但在商业社会里,它却具有实际效益。故在发达的文化社会里,为避免混淆视听,通常由一权威性的专业或学术机构颁奖,或命名某一称号,只是“大师”的桂冠,在中国的文化史上总是慎而又慎,即便这样,一旦某艺术家被冠以大师之衔,仍然在一定时期内仁者见仁,智者见智。

Contemporary people flattering a contemporary artist as a “master” is a commendatory, without practical value of academic positioning, but it has practical benefits in a commercial society.
