Since English is a common language on the Internet, this makes Australia more superior to other Asia-Pacific countries in the use of the Internet. In an interview, Mike Antonelli, IBM’s e-commerce project director for the Asia-Pacific region, said: “The Australian company’s internal computer network is running in an Internet-controlled environment, so it’s closely following the United States in the use of the Internet. There is a problem that English is a universal language on the Internet, so Australia’s efforts in the e-commerce market have been very successful.” Antonelli believes that language is very important. It can be both a driving force and an obstacle. For the Asia-Pacific region, many people in India speak English, so the Internet has developed rapidly in this country. The economic crisis in Asia has made the region more efficient, thereby increasing the demand for computers and the Internet. In fact, this crisis has accelerated the development of network technology. Although IBM is often seen as a big company serving large customers, it now also serves small customers. IBM believes that small- and medium-sized trade constitutes a huge and growing market.
