This September 23, soon after the 2015 China-U.S. Economic, Trade and Cultural Cooperation Forum was over in Los Angeles, I paid another visit to Hollywood apart of a group of entrepreneurs from China. As soon as I sighted “Hollywood” from a distance, I couldn’t help but sigh: Hello Hollywood, Here I am again!
My first visit was 27 years ago – in August 1988 - when I tried my first collaboration with an American partner. I was curious and prostrated myself in submission. Everything there was new to me – highrises, feasting and revelry, broad avenues, streams of people, and busy vehicles….
Today when I return, at first sight, Hollywood looks nothing more than an ordinary building complex on a hillside facing the sea, and it may become outdated as time goes by.
It was here that I got inspiration for my business. In 1853, there was only one house on this tract of land. In 1886, Harvey Wilcox purchased an area of 0.6 square kilometers in suburban Los Angeles, and began his journey as a real estate pioneer. His wife named the tract “Hollywood”after they planted a great number of hollies transported from Scotland. Later, Wilcox turned Hollywood into a small city, which gave rise to movie production, and the rest is history.
Just as China would have never seen economic progress without the reform and opening-up policies, my business could have never moved forward without constant enterprising efforts.
Today, China has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second largest economy after the United States. And my business has grown from a small plant specializing in one single product – strainer only exported to the U.S. – into a producer of an array of products, including hand-controlled carriers, forklifts, electric stackers, and anti-explosion forklifts, which are sold in 156 countries.
Here, the environment is well protected. The only things I could see were movies and tourists instead of factories or forest of chimneys. The U.S. has led the world in environmental protection despite the fact that it is the world’s most economically-developed country with a huge tourist industry. It draws visitors from across the globe. As a smokeless industry, tourism has greatly promoted economic development.
This is a path that a newly-rising developing country should choose, and widen: moving forward economically whilst protecting the environment.
It was here that I learned about the American strength of culture as a money spinner. Movie products feed the demand at home and have also been exported worldwide. Visitors to Hollywood not only see the movie industry, but also get a taste of glamor and culture.
Hollywood has blazed a pioneering trail of entrepreneurship. Here, you might become a movie star overnight, but it won’t be long before you are eclipsed by others, newly-rising stars.
The only way to keep shining as bright as a star is to keep innovating and remain enterprising.
