- Lianyungang Port is one of the most important ports in China. It has many favourable natural conditions. However, there exist certain disadvantages, such as small land area, considerable sediment and siltation, and difficulties in the treatment of soft grounds. In order to exploit the harbour resources, the main problems in the treatment of soft grounds and the experiences which have been gained since the port was constructed in 1934 are surveyed and summarised, and some preliminary conclusions are drawn. In this article, engineering geological conditions are reviewed, the causes of slope failures of wharves, breakwaters and revetments are discussed and successful examples are presented.
