In 1974 Bryan suggested that care for patients with respiratory failure, prone position may be beneficial. Piehl and colleagues in 1976, Douglas and colleagues reported in 1977 that their oxygenation was significantly improved when patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) were switched from supine position to prone position.
