British critic John Kelly “What is the use of art ?,” a book discusses the definition of art, elegant and popular art which is better, art can improve humanity and other major issues. Kelly believes that the definition of artwork is completely subjective, you think something is a work of art, it is a work of art. Popular art expresses emotions far beyond the emotions expressed by elegant art, which are more in line with the universal needs of mankind, so it is superior to elegant art. Behind the pursuit of elegant art hides the ideology of class prejudice and privilege. There is a lack of factual evidence that works of art have the function of purifying the mind, improving morality, and coordinating human relations. Kelly’s critique of art’s “stigma” has a huge impact on classical art theory. How to deal with the art issues proposed by Kelly and improve and develop our art theory are the arduous tasks before cultural workers.
