闻一多是中国著名的诗人和学者,他的诗集《红烛》、《死水》,洋溢着强烈的爱国主义精神,而为数众多的学术著作至今也受到普遍重视。余上沅则是著名的戏剧教育家和戏剧理论家,他的《戏剧论集》和《国剧运动》,是中国较早研究世界戏剧艺术的成功之作,其中还记录着中国戏剧发展的重要历史。 余上沅比闻一多长两岁,他们都是湖北人,余生于沙市,闻出生在浠水。他们曾有过几次可以相识的机会,可惜失之交臂。五四运动时,他们都到上海出席全国学联大会,可是各忙其事,没有接触。闻一多在清华学校苦读十年,但1922年余上沅到清华学校教务处任职员时,闻一多恰在这一年赴美留学了。 Wen Yiduo is a well-known Chinese poet and scholar. Wen Yiduo studied hard in Tsinghua School for ten years, but when Yu Shangyuan went to the Academic Affairs Office of Tsinghua University in 1922, Wen Yiduo just went to the United States to study in that year.
