The Jet Propulsion Company conducted an ignition test for a second-stage solid rocket motor developed for the USAF’s small ICBM program at its test bed in Sacramento, California. In the February 9 ignition test, the engine thrust was 41,000 pounds and the burning time was 41.7 seconds. The company said the engine uses a graphite fiber wound shell, carbon-carbon nozzle material and a new type of internal insulation. Last week, the Air Force signed contracts with four companies to continue the design and development of a small ICBM propulsion system.
