The veils that reflect Tunisian domestic culture, such as “sefsari” or “takrita”, are gradually neglected and replaced by veils from the Near and Middle East. This means that a transnational religious fact has emerged within a nation-state. At present, the high-profile “khimar” worn by young women in Tunisia is the indicator of the global social changes triggered by the infiltration of indigenous influences. In this paper, I intend to discuss the reasons that lead to the current phenomenon of wearing veil in Tunisia and the social and political implications of this new mode of practice.
