激光武器是一种新概念武器,它所具有的许多优越性一直在吸引着人们的注意力。作为目前唯一的超级大国,美国在此领域保持着技术上的领先地位。从某种意义上讲,可以说代表着世界水平。当前,美国在中低功率的激光武器方面,技术上已经成熟,进入了实用部署阶段,并在逐步改进性能,完善其作战原则。高能激光武器计划自1993年“战略防御倡议”(SDI)计划下马后,作了相应的调整,其现阶段主要研究方向是在弹道导弹防御中的应用,并附带其他使命。高能激光武器现由弹道导弹防御局和陆海空三军共同开发,已进入关键技术演示验证和综合技术开发阶段,预计在下世纪初的前十年中基本完成武器化。
