北京作为全国政治文化中心，在加快建设现代化国际大都市的进程中，十分重视古都风貌的保护，2000年北京市在城市总体规划中确定了25片历史文化保护街区，位于天安门东侧的南北池子历史文化保护区就是其中之一。2001年秋，南池子历史文化保护区因其在全市历史文化保护街区中具有较强的代表性和示范作用，被北京市市委、市政府确定为首批历史文化保护区房屋修缮和改建的试点区。
