In this paper, by contrasting Chinese college students’ high and low English proficiency groups and Han and English natives’ tendency to classify objects and substances, this paper explores the ways in which the conceptual systems in foreign language learners’ minds exist and play their roles. The results showed that the high-level group tended to classify the shape as the standard than the low-level group, which is especially evident in the classification of simple objects. The research shows that English learning has caused the adjustment and reconstruction of the concept representation system in the minds of Chinese college students, leading to the change of their propensity to classify objects and substances.
