Electroslag welding is a new welding method invented by Barton Welding Research Institute of the Soviet Union. Its main purpose is to be able to quickly weld heavy machinery and large thicknesses of steel; so it has drawn great attention in the machinery manufacturing industry. China is now engaged in socialist industrial construction, no doubt, electroslag welding technology will also be promoted in our country. This paper describes the electroslag welding test of low carbon steel, and studies the chemical composition of the weld metal, macroscopic and microstructure of the joint, the mechanical properties of the welded joint and the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties.
