Objective To study the physical characteristics of long-handled hockey sticks and baseball balls and to explore the potential risk of long-handled hockey stick ball injuries. Methods The experiment sphere consisted of 12 long-handled hockey sticks and baseballs. All of them were controlled by 24 h environment before the test, which made the temperature and humidity of the sphere consistent. The physical properties of the long-handled hockey stick and the baseball were measured, such as mass, circumference, compression value and recovery coefficient , To compare the differences between long-handled hockey and baseball with an independent sample t-test. Results The ball mass of long-handled hockey ball was (144.65 ± 0.29) g, the circumference was (19.97 ± 0.02) cm, the compression value was (91.76 ± 1.23) kg, the recovery coefficient was (0.633 ± 0.011), the weight of baseball ball was (146.12 ± 0.45) ) g, the circumference was (23.20 ± 0.06) cm, the compression value was (124.76 ± 1.68) kg, and the recovery coefficient was (0.528 ± 0.005). The quality, circumference and compression values of long-handled hockey sticks were significantly smaller than that of baseballs, and the recovery coefficients were significantly greater than that of baseballs (P <0.05). Conclusion Although the physical properties of long-handled hockey meet international standards, long-handled hockey and baseball have the same risk of causing serious sports injuries. It is suggested that the ball may be graded according to age and skill and be used by different levels of players to reduce the risk of sports injuries.
