沙棘是胡颓子科的一种落叶灌木或小乔木,适应能力强,繁殖容易。具有固氮保土、防风固沙、保持水土等多种生态功能的一种优良树种。生长快,开花早,结果多,根系发达,蘖苗多,有利更新。生长快,砍伐期短,枝条易燃,又是营造薪炭林的优良树种。沙质、壤质或浅土石山地,土壤PH值9.5的碱性土壤以及含盐量达1.1％的盐碱地都能生长,繁衍成林。它不畏酷暑、严寒,不怕沙埋、沙压,在平均相对湿度50％以下的荒漠地区,只要有地下水或灌溉水补给就能生长发育,但不耐过于粘重的土壤。
