Since the 1950s, it has been observed that there has been a general decline in child mortality rates in developing countries. However, the phenomenon of varying levels of child mortality not only persists in different countries, but also people in different socio-economic levels in the same country. The recently completed study entitled “Child mortality in developing countries: socio-economic differences, trends and implications” was intended to investigate the relationship between trends in child mortality and socio-economic conditions in developing countries. International Population Division and the United Nations Regional Commission conducted a study of this topic. The study includes countries in various underdeveloped regions: Africa (Kenya), Latin America (Costa Rica, Honduras and Paraguay) and Asia (Jordan and Thailand). By comparison, the child mortality rates in the six countries are discussed: socio-economic analysis
