1902年,康有为弟子欧榘甲在美国旧金山市的《文兴日报》上发表了一组政论文,其核心思想乃是主张“广东自立”以救中国。这组政论文很快由日本横滨的新民丛报社印行了题名《新广东》的单行本,而其所具有的民族革命宣传品的性质,在当时激起了很大反响。尤其是康梁派内部的争论,不但彰显了梁启超、欧榘甲、徐勤等弟子的革命倾向,并且,从乃师康有为的力加遏制,亦可见保皇会策略的变动。这场政治论争尚延续到文学书写,在《新小说》杂志中继续展开。经由梁启超的政治小说《新中国未来记》的敷演以及受康有为压制后的叙述调整,欧榘甲的粤剧《黄萧养回头》以戏曲形式坚持己见、继续争辩,加上清政府驻古巴总领事廖恩焘创作的粤讴《趁早乘机》的大力呼应,《新广东》构想的以地方自治主导的维新政治蓝图,在文学空间也得到了充分的演绎。

Through the performance of Liang Qichao’s political novel “New China’s Future Book,” and his narrative adjustment after Kang Youwei repressed, Ouyang Jia’s Cantonese opera “Huang Xiao Yang Uprising” persisted in his traditional opera and continued arguing.
