英语中某些结构形式上是肯定的,而意义上是否定的。高考备考必须熟练掌握的常用句型主要有:
1. more than…can…相当于can not, 意为“简直不,无法,难以。”
例1 He has more books than he can read. 他的藏书之多使他不可能读完。
例2 The beauty of Hang Zhou is more than I can describe. 杭州的美丽非语言所能描绘。
例3 That is more than I can tell. 那我就不能多讲了。
例4 That is more than you can do.这是你所不及的。
2. more than one can help 相当于as little as possible 意为“尽量不,绝对不”。
例5 Don’t tell him more than you can help.能不跟他讲就尽量不跟他讲。
例6 She never does work than she can help.能不做的事他是绝对不会做的。
3. more A than B 意为“是A不是B;与其说是B不如说是A”。
例7 The book seems to be more a dictionary than a grammar. 这本书看起来与其说是一本语法书,不如说是一本词典。
例8 He is more brave than wise. 他有勇无谋。
例9 I was more angry than frightened. 我不是害怕了,而是生气了。
4. 比较级﹢than﹢to 意为“不至于……,懂得……不该……”。
例10 You ought to know better than to go swimming immediately after a meal. 你应该知道刚吃过饭不宜立即去游泳。
例11 I am wiser than to believe that.我不至于傻到竟然相信这种事情。
例12 She knew better than to go out alone on such a night. 她懂得不该在这样的夜晚单独出去的。
例13 Fools may believe you, but I know better. 傻子才会相信你,但我可不相信你的话。
5. far from +动名词/名词 意为“远非……” “决不……”。
例14 He is far from being honest.他决非诚实之人。
例15 I’m far from blaming him. 我决不是怪他。
例16 Her writing is far from perfection.她的写作还不够完美。
6. have yet to ﹢动词 意为“还没有……”, 这种结构相当于have not yet ﹢过去分词。
例17 I have yet to hear the story. 我还没听说过那个故事。
例18 I have yet to learn the new skill. 我还没学过那种新技巧。
7. anything but 意为 “绝对不,根本不,一点儿也不”。
例19 The wooden bridge is anything but safe. 那座木头桥一点儿也不安全。
例20 He is anything but scholar.他决不是个学者。
例21 I will do anything but that.我决不干那种事。
8. “as ﹢形容词原级﹢as”表示否定。
例22 A nod is as good as a wink to the blind horse. 根本不必点头。
例23 I was as surprised as anyone on hearing the news. 听到这个消息没有人比我更吃惊了。
9. “may(might)as well”表示否定。
例24 It is still raining hard outside; we may as well stay here over the night. 外边依然在下大雨,我们还不如在这里过夜呢。
例25 How slow the bus is! We might as well walk. 这汽车开的多慢呀!我们还不如步行呢。
10. the last…+定语从句(或to info.),意为“最不可能的” “极少可能的” “最不合适的”。
例26 He is the last man to accept a bribe. 他不是受贿的那种人。
例27 He would be the last man to say such things.他决不会说这种话。
例28 Romantic is the last thing I am. 我决非浪漫之人。
例29 He is the last man for such job. 他最不配担任这项工作。
例30 This is the last place where I expected to meet you. 我怎么也没有想到在这里遇见你。
例31 He is the last man she wants to meet. 她最不愿意遇见的就是他。

12. 疑问句在特定的环境和语调下,问句具有与其形式相反的含义。
