历代米价之涨落,反映着时势的稳乱和收成的丰歉。唐时,斗米一文,行旅不齑粮,可谓“米贱如泥”。明永乐间,贵阳因乱故,米升值20金,可谓“米贵如珠。”清宣统元年(1909年),长江流域大水,粮田普遍遭淹。米价每石从3,000文(制钱)暴涨到7,000文,官府文恬武嬉,不管百姓死活,造成米珠薪桂,激起平民抢米风潮。
